Bio

Dr. Karim Maredia is a Professor and Assistant Dean and Director of International Programs for the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Prior to joining MSU in 1989, he worked with the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) in Mexico as a research scientist, conducting work on germplasm resistant to maize stem borers and other stored grain insect pests. He has published more than 120 papers, policy briefs and book chapters, and co-edited eight books. He serves as director of the MSU World Technology Access Program (WorldTAP) and has designed and led international training programs in agricultural biotechnology, biosafety, food safety, intellectual property management and technology transfer. Since 2017, he has been a member of the African Union High-Level Panel on Emerging Technologies, and he has received numerous international honors, including an honorary doctorate from the University of Ricardo Palma in Peru, election as a Fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences in India and recognition as a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences for his contributions to research, outreach, education and capacity building.

 

Outreach

International outreach is central to Maredia’s work. Through his role as director of WorldTAP, he has developed global knowledge networks and facilitated the transfer of knowledge, technologies and training to partner countries to support agricultural development and innovation. He has trained more than 12,500 academic and non-academic professionals from Africa, Asia, Latin America and other regions, helping to empower scholars, promote excellence in education and advance sustainable development. His outreach efforts, funded by organizations including USAID, USDA, UN-FAO, the World Bank, Rockefeller Foundation, Winrock International and the Gates Foundation, also include policy guidance and technology adoption initiatives through the African Union and the African Academy of Sciences, with impact across Africa and the global community.
