Reporting Requirements
What is a Capacity Project?
A capacity project is a general framework for research efforts, regardless of the funding source. The project plan describes the long-term (up to five-year) research goals, objectives, anticipated results and stakeholder impacts. It is adaptable to your research and will evolve and develop with your expanding areas of interest.
The funding from NIFA is provided to AgBioResearch (and not directly to you) and is referred to as capacity funding. These funds are used to increase the University’s research capacity, e.g. by hiring and supporting people who work in the areas that advance MSU’s research agenda.
Reporting Requirement for Capacity Reports
Capacity projects consist of Hatch, Hatch Multistate, Animal Health & Disease Research and McIntire-Stennis.
Descriptions may be found at https://www.nifa.usda.gov/grants/programs/capacity-grants.
Project Initiation or Project Renewals
AgBioResearch has launched a new submission application to simplify and streamline the submission process for USDA-NIFA capacity funds. Use this link to the new application.
To access the application, you must be a registered user. Please ensure your MSU email is registered in our system, as you will need to log in with your MSU NETID to access the application. The application will retrieve your name and email address from your registered account, so it's important to use the correct MSU email. If you see a "Request Access" error message, it means your email address is not registered in our system.
For support in registering your email or using the application, please contact the app administrator at ABR.Research.Admin@msu.edu. For all other Umbrella-related questions, reach out to the NIFA Project Manager, Jackie Garcia-Henning, at jdesande@msu.edu.
Reporting Requirements for Annual and Final Reports
USDA-NIFA’s reporting cycle runs from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30. The faculty member should have received an individualized Capacity Project Profile that contains action items, reporting period and submission links. All projects are triaged through the office of AgBioResearch, and all submissions are entered into NIFA’s NRS system by the site administrator.
