Teaching

Laurie teaches ANS 101 Professional Development in Animal Science I. This is one of the required courses for incoming ANS students. The course introduces them to the many areas and opportunities within animal science. It also gives students the chance to meet faculty within the Animal Science department of which they may later wish to establish a mentoring relationship.

Laurie advises students within the Animal Biology & Pre-veterinary, and Companion & Exotic Animal Biology concentrations.

Background

Laurie attended MSU as a pre-veterinary student but switched her major to Veterinary Technology. She graduated from the two-year program and went on to become a Licensed Veterinary Technician. After working in the veterinary profession for over 20 years Laurie was suddenly drawn to higher education. She was the director and associate professor for a veterinary technology program in Champaign, Illinois for twelve years. After deciding to relocate back to Michigan, she was excited to be offered this position as an academic specialist advisor within the Animal Science department. She enjoys advising ANS students especially those in the Animal Biology & Pre-vet and Companion & Exotic Animal Biology concentrations.

Her strong passion for animal welfare has influenced her career choices and continues to aid her in developing strong bonds with her students. Students often comment that she is the calm within the storm, helping relieve students of the stress and anxiety that comes from attending a large university. Having an advisor who sincerely cares about their success and welfare is very important. Laurie has filled this role for many animal science students and hopes to continue to do this for many more.
