Empowering Michigan teens through civic engagement: 4-H Capitol Experience
A hands-on approach to public policy where teens have a platform for youth voice.
Teens in Michigan are deeply concerned about issues affecting their present and future. From the impact of social media and global stability, to academic pressures, economic uncertainty and political divisiveness, young people are navigating a complex world. At the same time, they seek positive peer relationships and opportunities to make a difference.
One avenue for engagement is Michigan State University Extension’s 4-H Capitol Experience, a three-day conference focused on civic engagement and public policy. Taking place March 16 – 18, in Lansing, this event offers high school students a firsthand look at how government operates and influences the issues they care about.
At 4-H Capitol Experience, participants will work in teams to select a public policy issue, then engage with state legislators, agency staff, lobbyists and policy experts to explore solutions. This interactive experience not only deepens their understanding of government processes, but also introduces them to career pathways in public policy.
Beyond the conference, participants are encouraged to learn about their local government through pre-conference activities, such as engaging with school boards or attending community meetings. This ensures they arrive prepared to make meaningful contributions.
4-H Capitol Experience is more than just an educational event – it’s a platform for youth empowerment. Participants have the chance to:
- Develop and present their own policy proposals.
- Engage in discussions with policymakers and stakeholders.
- Gain leadership skills through hands-on legislative simulations.
Everett H., a past participant and current steering committee member, reflects on his experience:
“4-H Capitol Experience is an event that not only teaches youth about one of the most important aspects of American politics, but it is also a whole lot of fun. Every time I have gone, the experience has one-upped the last one in terms of fun and memories made with all of the amazing people that I have gotten to meet and become friends with. I've learned a lot about our state government and its processes, along with how to interact and work as a team. As a steering committee member, I have facilitated the event twice, and each time, I grow more confident that today’s youth will do a fantastic job leading our country.”
High school students interested in experiencing government in action and participating in this hands-on, experiential learning opportunity are encouraged to contact their local MSU Extension office or visit the 4-H Capitol Experience website to register.
