Are you dreaming of serving up your signature dishes from a food truck or trailer? Whether it’s tacos, pastries, or globally inspired street food, launching a mobile food business takes more than just a great recipe—it requires careful planning. That’s why Michigan State University Extension, the MSU Product Center and the MSU Center for Regional Food Systems have released a new, free downloadable workbook designed specifically for people interested in starting a food truck business.

The resource, “Developing a Michigan Food Truck Business Concept: A Worksheet to Guide Your Business Planning,” walks budding entrepreneurs step-by-step through the early stages of planning their venture. It covers essential topics such as branding, menu development, licensing, operations, ingredient sourcing, marketing, finances, and more. With fillable worksheets and guiding questions, the tool helps new business owners organize their ideas and build a strong foundation for success.

“This workbook is meant to spark ideas, highlight important considerations, and give aspiring food truck operators a framework to turn their vision into a viable plan,” said Jamie Rahrig of the MSU Center for Regional Food Systems. “It’s a practical, user-friendly tool for anyone who is serious about starting a mobile food business.”

In addition to the worksheets, the guide connects readers to other valuable free resources, including sample business plan templates, financial tools, and MSU Extension’s no-cost online course, “How to Start a Food Truck Business in Michigan” (available in both English and Spanish).

Food trucks and trailers are a way to bring innovative food and beverage concepts to market while keeping start-up costs lower than opening a traditional restaurant. However, success depends on being prepared for the realities of licensing, operations, and competition. This workbook equips entrepreneurs with the knowledge and planning structure needed to take the next step toward opening day.

The workbook is available now as a free download. Aspiring food truck owners are encouraged to explore this resource and start mapping out their path to success.
