Lisa Tiemann hosts students from India
Two PhD students join us this semester for a sample of the MSU agronomic research experience
Meet Isha Popat and Krush Shah, two PhD students visiting PSM from Somaiya Vidyaviha University in India where Lisa Tiemann is adjunct, who came get a glimpse of agronomy research here at MSU. Their university is in a sugar cane growing region where the local farmers are interested in returning carbon to the soil to increase productivity. Above, they pose with Lisa and a flag depicting the sugar cane processing plant that they work with in the region.
The students arrived in early February with funding from their institution, which does not have an agriculture research program. Krush Shah is studying the effects of drought and deluge on nitrogen fixation in corn fields. The other student, Isha Popat is working with Lisa on a NRCS recommendation. They will be here through early June, when they return to India with Lisa.
“Ultimately,” Lisa said, “India is working toward the goal of becoming completely self-sufficient, especially in agriculture and food production, by their 100th anniversary of independence (1947-2047). We do farming and agriculture research so differently here – it’s great to have this exchange because we can all learn from each other.”
Lisa first introduced us to these students when she returned from her visit abroad and gave this seminar: https://mediaspace.msu.edu/media/PSM+HRT+Fall+Seminar+Series/1_icbnl07a
“These two are my constant companions in India. They help me get around and to communicate with stakeholders,” Lisa said.
