Landscape Architecture’s Jun-Hyun Kim was selected as a 2019 Landscape Architecture Foundation’s Research Fellow

Jun-Hyun Kim, PhD, program director and associate professor in MSU’s School of Planning, Design and Construction’s Landscape Architecture program, was selected as a 2019 Landscape Architecture Foundation Research Fellow of the Case Study Investigation program with funding support.
According to the foundation’s website, “research fellows work with leading practitioners to develop methods to quantify benefits and produce case studies of exemplary high-performing landscapes.”
Specifically, the research fellows lead the Case Study Investigation collaboration among faculty, practitioners and students; work with firms to identify the performance benefits of select landscape projects; develop methods to quantify environmental, social and economic benefits; oversee the case study preparation process and participate in program webinars and ongoing case study reviews.
The standard award is a $1,000 honorarium for fellows and $9,000 to support the student research assistant, with varying amounts awarded based on case study workload. Eleven research fellows were selected nationwide with a highly competitive review process.
Kim and his research assistant, landscape architecture senior Amanda Wakefield, will assess landscape performance of the Chatham University Eden Hall Campus focusing on environmental, economic and social benefits. The research site was originally designed by Debra Guenther, partner in Mithun, MSU landscape architecture alumna and Landscape Architecture Alumni & Advisory Board member. Kim and Wakefield collaborated with Guenther on this continuing project.
“Conducting the research on this site is a very important step to build up a stronger partnership with our alumni. I believe this fellowship will offer a great opportunity not only to promote our program/school’s rigorous scholarly activities, but also to highlight our alumni’s exemplary project,” Kim said.
