Eva Almenar, Ph.D., professor in the School of Packaging at Michigan State University, has been elected to the 2025 Class of Fellows of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT).

IFT is an international professional organization with more than 11,000 members across over 100 countries. Since its founding in 1939, the institute has brought together leaders in food science, technology and related professions to address global challenges in food security, nutrition and sustainability. Each year, IFT honors individuals whose careers demonstrate outstanding achievement, leadership and service to the profession. Election as an IFT Fellow is considered one of the highest distinctions in the field.
Almenar is widely recognized for her expertise in food packaging, with a research program dedicated to developing innovative systems that extend shelf life, maintain food quality and improve safety while advancing sustainability. Her projects, supported by both industry and research sponsors, aim to create packaging solutions that not only benefit consumers but also contribute to a more resilient food system.
For Almenar, the recognition carries special significance.
“It is an honor to be one of the six new fellows of the Institute of Food Technologists,” she said. “This recognition means a great deal to me because it represents peer acknowledgment of my contributions to advancing the field of food science, particularly in food packaging.”
The 2025 class of IFT Fellows was formally recognized during IFT FIRST: Annual Event and Expo, held in July at McCormick Place in Chicago. The celebration included a Fellows Recognition Forum and the annual Awards Ceremony and Reception.
