About the job: Immediate start date for a full-time lead grower in an agricultural operation. Must be willing and be to work extended hours in the peak season (January-June), with the opportunity to work less hours at low volume seasons (July-December).
You will use your experience and expertise plus various components of plant production to accomplish growing a quality crop of seedlings and unrooted plants. Key components of the job include, but not limited to: water and fertilization management, along with disease and pest control. We use a team approach for propagation, transplanting, production and producing the finished product. You will work in coordination with other managers with the common goal of plant quality excellence. It is important to have a good attitude, display cooperation, and be able to communicate well with others.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
· Plan and Prepare. Think ahead proactively for product quality and fulfillment of plant expectations in alignment with schedule. This includes: prep for crops in greenhouse, recording and communicating plant schedules, timing of PRG application, examine for pests/disease, monitoring quality control/nutrient deficiencies and health of the plant.
· Regular communication and coordination with managers and owners.
· Manage and oversee basic growing practices of sanitation, cleanliness, plant spacing/location, daily watering, fertilizing.
· Hire and manage assistant growers, schedule staffing to accomplish jobs of moving product within the propagation stages and daily watering.
· IMP/IPM: pest scouting, ID fungicide/insecticide application. Maintain spray equipment. Michigan Pesticide License required.
· Documentation: Prepare Google Sheets for weekly propagation assignments. Keep updated records of chemical applications and jobs completed.
· Participation in Continued Education, mostly on-line classes.
JOB OVERVIEW
Daily: Watering; Monitoring Q Com temperature controls (heaters and fans); Learn Ball Seed Co. computer program (daily documentation); Walk the crop (assess health, identify problems, communicate with owner); Train, manage, assign assistance with specific jobs; Track and dispose of dead plant material; Keep desk and chemical area clean and organized
Weekly: Complete soil tests; Update pest cards; Complete 2-week check for URC process; Organize and track Ball plant material; Complete and record appropriate spray schedule for PGR, fertilizing, pests; Clean watering booms, drip lines, change filters; Communicate with owner for plans and implementation in upcoming week +
Monthly: Test equipment, check supply inventory, order supplies
Yearly: License information; Continued education
QUALIFICATIONS Current with Michigan Pesticide Licensure; 2 years experience as a grower in a greenhouse; Hands-on approach, working will with others; Able to work in a natural environment with varying temperatures and weather; Some college classes regarding horticulture, preferred; Highly proficient in MS Office (Excel) and Google Sheets; Familiar with greenhouse irrigation systems; Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
