Invasive Plant Surveys in northern NY

The New York Natural Heritage Program is hiring up to twelve field technicians to conduct invasive plant surveys at the Fort Drum Military Installation. Start date of the project will be mid-May, 2023. Positions could be filled by college students or professionals with relevant experience. Student positions will end at the beginning of the academic year; non-student positions may be extended into September. Work will occur Monday through Thursday, 10 hours per day, 40 hours per week. Weekend or holiday work may be required to access certain areas of the installation.

Up to two Assistant Crew Leaders may be hired to help supervise other technicians in the field. This position will have more responsibility and may have a slightly longer duration than the other technician positions.

The New York Natural Heritage Program (NYNHP) is a program of the Research Foundation for the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY- ESF) whose mission is to facilitate the conservation of New York’s biodiversity by providing comprehensive information and scientific expertise on rare species and natural ecosystems. NYNHP works in partnership with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and other state, federal and private organizations involved in natural resource management, land protection and stewardship, and advancing the conservation of biodiversity. Duties

• Field crew will work as a team to document the presence and abundance of invasive plant species on the Fort Drum Military Installation.

• Work outdoors in all weather conditions.

• Collect data using tablets equipped with GIS apps and Trimble GPS units.

• Opportunities for professional development will be available.

Required Qualifications

• Course work or field experience in one or more of the following areas: community ecology, wetland systems, zoology, botany, wildlife management, or other related natural resource topics.

• Familiarity with plants of the Northeastern U.S.

• Willingness and capability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

• As per Fort Drum requirements, applicants must be U.S. citizens and a background check will be conducted.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience identifying plants, particularly invasive species.

• Experience with GPS, GIS, and computer applications.

• Familiarity with field navigation using aerial imagery and topographic maps.

• Familiarity with taxonomic keys and field guides.

• Possession of a valid driver’s license.
