The Department of Environmental Sciences at Tennessee State University invites applications for a full-time (9-month academic year) tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in Natural Resource Management, beginning Fall 2025. We seek an innovative and student-centered educator with expertise in silviculture and applied forest ecology, particularly in forest ecosystems of the southeastern United States.
The successful candidate will primarily contribute to our undergraduate teaching mission, with responsibilities including instruction in Silviculture (with lab) as a required core course and additional undergraduate courses aligned with their expertise. Possible courses include Forest Vegetation, Introduction to Wildland Fire, Forest Management Planning, Natural Resource Sampling, and Ecological Monitoring and Data Analysis. The candidate will also be expected to develop and teach a graduate-level course in their area of specialization.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Academic advising and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students
- Curriculum development and student recruitment
- Engagement in scholarly activities such as applied pedagogical research or discipline-specific research in forest ecosystems
- Participation in departmental, college, and university service
- Active contribution to the department’s pursuit of Society of American Foresters (SAF) accreditation for an undergraduate Natural Resources and Ecosystem Management degree program we are developing
The Department of Environmental Sciences offers interdisciplinary B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. programs focused on natural resource management, environmental sustainability, and ecosystem resilience. Faculty maintain strong research, teaching, and outreach programs across Tennessee and the southeastern U.S., in collaboration with local and regional partners including the Tennessee Division of Forestry and Cooperative Extension.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Silviculture, Forestry, Forest Ecology, or a closely related field by the time of appointment
- Demonstrated potential for excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching
- Commitment to experiential, field-based learning and student-centered instruction
- Evidence of scholarly activity (e.g., publications or presentations)
- Preference will be given to candidates with at least one degree from a Society of American Foresters (SAF) accredited program
