Working around grain bins and manure pits can result in both fatal and nonfatal injuries. Understanding how to safely work in these environments is the purpose for the grain bin and manure pit safety training programs. The grain bin safety program is intended for anyone with grain bins on site. The manure pit safety program is intended for anyone who stores and applies manure. Farmers are at a very high risk for both fatal and nonfatal injuries, and farming is one of the few industries in which family members (who often share the work and live on the premises) are also at risk for fatal and nonfatal injuries.

Personnel from the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety will provide the training.

At the conclusion of the grain bin safety program, participants will:

  • Be able to identify hazards associated with confined space work.
  • Understand the process for confined space entry and lock out/ tag out procedures.
  • Understand monitoring the air quality in a confined space.
  • Understand the harness that needs to be worn during an entry.
  • Understand the job responsibilities of a confined space attendant.
  • Know where to look for OSHA references and resources related to confined space entry in the grain industry.
  • Perform a grain bin entry.
  • Understand the rescue procedures for someone trapped in grain.

At the conclusion of the manure pit safety program, participants will:

  • Understand monitoring the air quality in a confined space.
  • Understand the job responsibilities of a confined space attendant.
