The climate-forest-climate loop: can we use nature to fight climate change?
Climate change is impacting forests everywhere, and the resulting shifts in their diversity, health and functioning will either slow down or speed up climate change through biogeochemical feedbacks. In my talk I will attempt to generalize about what we know about both sides of this circular ‘biogeo-economy’. I will focus largely on the future integrity of forests and on whether there is potential to use them as a natural climate solution -- or if that is a misguided distraction from what global society needs to do to return to a sustainable trajectory for humankind.
