Ectomycorrhizal tree islands in arbuscular mycorrhizal forests: critical sources of inoculum for ectomycorrhizal tree seedling establishment.

Deciduous forests in northeastern North America are comprised of a mixture of ectomycorrhizal (EM) and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) trees, but global change drivers have caused declines of EM trees, limiting forest ecosystem functioning. Patches of EM trees can function as sources of fungal inoculum necessary for the regeneration of EM trees, but their role in North American deciduous forests have largely remained unexplored. In this talk, I will present some of my research investigating how forest tree composition influences EM fungal communities and EM tree seedling establishment.
